AB - Serotonin receptors modulate numerous behavioral and neuropsychological processes. Therefore, they are the target for the action of many drugs, such as antipsychotics, antidepressants, antiemetics, migraine remedies, and many others. The 5-HT1A receptors have been involved in the pathogenesis and treatment of anxiety and depression and represent a promising target for new drugs with reduced extrapyramidal side effects. In most antidepressants, a piperazine-based structural motif can be identified as a common moiety. Here we describe the synthesis, pharmacological, and in silico characterization of a novel arylpiperazines series with excellent 5-HT1A affinity. The final compounds, 4a, 8a, and 8b, were selected according to predictions of in silico pharmacokinetics, docking analysis, and molecular dynamics in conjunction with physical properties, and metabolic stability. The accentuated molecules could serve as a lead compound for developing 5-HT1A drug-like molecules for depression treatment.

AB - We present the green, highly atom-economical, solid-state silica gel-catalyzed synthesis of polysubstituted 1,4- and 1,2-dihydropyridines (DHPs) from commercially available materials, amines and ethyl propiolate. The DHP skeleton was assembled by heating the reactants and silica gel in a closed vessel. Aliphatic amines provided 1,4-isomers as the main or only DHP products, but the reactions of aromatic amines yielded a mixture of 1,4- and 1,2-isomers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of the formation of a 1,2-DHP structure by the reaction of an amine with propiolic ester. Addition of 1 mass percent of H2SO4 to silica gel shifted the product distribution to 1,4-DHP as the main or the only isomer obtained. Experimental and theoretical analyses led to the identification of two key intermediates en route to DHPs and the explanation of the observed regioisomeric ratios. 1,2-DHPs show blue-cyan fluorescence in MeOH with the quantum yield Φ = 0.10–0.22 relative to quinine sulfate Φ = 0.58 and 1,4-DHPs show blue-violet fluorescence with Φ = 0.09–0.81.

AB - In present work, the enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized by Nafion® (Naf) on Pt,Ru–C nanocomposite and an ionic liquid (IL)–modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) in order to create cholesterol biosensor (Naf/ChOx/Pt,Ru–C/IL-CPE). The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectrometry, while their electrochemical performance was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. Excellent synergism between IL 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), Pt,Ru–C, and ChOx, as modifiers of CPE, offers the most pronounced analytical performance for improved cholesterol amperometric determination in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was found for the range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 5.5%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed Naf/ChOx/Pt,Ru–C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing. The proposed biosensor was successfully applied to determine free cholesterol in a human blood serum sample via its enzymatic reaction product hydrogen peroxide despite the presence of possible interferences. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for the unspiked as well as the spiked human blood serum sample. The obtained results indicated excellent accuracy and precision of the method, concluding that the developed biosensor can be a promising alternative to existing commercial cholesterol tests used in medical practice. AB - Crude oil samples from the Sharara-C oil field (Concession NC-115, Murzuq Basin, SW Libya) were analysed by organic geochemical methods in order to infer the geochemical characteristics of their respective source rocks. Aromatic hydrocarbons were analysed by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography – tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS) was used to analyse saturated biomarkers. The Sharara-C oils are interpreted to have been generated by marine shales containing mixed terrigenous and marine organic materials deposited in an intermediate (suboxic) environment. Age-specific biomarker ratios indicated that the oils are older than Cretaceous, and maturation-related parameters pointed to their high thermal maturity. Consistent with previous studies, source rocks are inferred to be “hot” shales in the Lower Silurian Tanezzuft Formation. Almost all the parameter ratios calculated varied over a very narrow range, indicating that the investigated oils were compositionally similar. The only significant difference that was noted concerned the sterane/hopane ratios whose variation suggested that there was some variability in the composition of the source organic material. The organic geochemical parameters determined for the Sharara-C crude oils were compared with published data on other crude oils from Concession NC-115. Almost all the parameters agreed well with previously published data on oils from this part of the Murzuq Basin. The greatest deviation concerned the values of some of the maturity parameters. This tended to confirm the conclusions of previous studies concerning the presence of a number of distinct oil families and sub-families in the Sharara oil field area which are genetically related but which have different maturities.

AB - Refinery wastes generated in conventional crude oil refining processes, or in accidental situations, are complex substrates for treatment and disposal. Petroleum desulphurisation catalysts can also be hazardous refinery waste. They contain various metals, such as cobalt, molybdenum, nickel and tungsten. In this paper, three petroleum refiner’s spent desulphurisation catalysts were investigated. These catalysts were not suitable for recycling and, therefore, were classified as hazardous waste. They were chemically characterised, including phase composition and their effect on a consortium of microorganisms used in the process of bioremediation. Catalysts contained up to 2.26 g kg−1 of total petroleum hydrocarbons, up to 56.7 g kg−1 of iron, 18.6 g kg−1 of molybdenum, and less than 0.1 mg kg−1 each of cobalt and nickel. These obtained results show that bioremediation of such waste is possible.

AB - The main objective of this study was to analyze the capacity of Cedrus atlantica (Endl.) Manetti ex Carrière 1855 to accumulate macro- and microelements in order to assess the environmental status. The element concentrations were measured using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The obtained pH values in this study show that the urban soils are neutral to slightly alkaline with low OM content. Macroelements with the highest mean concentrations in soil are Si, Al, Fe, K, Mg, and Ca. The ratio > 2 was determined for mean concentrations of Ca in the soil and Mg in needles from the Zvezdara forest, and for mean concentrations of Cl, Ti, and Fe in needles from the Byford’s forest in relation to the reference site. The accumulation pattern of the macroelements based on the Biological Concentration Factor (BCF) values > 1 for needles is for P, S, Cl, and Ca. Microelements with the highest mean values in soil are Ba, Zr, Ce, Cr, Zn, Rb, Sr, V, and La. Microelements with the highest mean values in Atlas cedar needles are Ce, La, Ba, and Cs. The ratio > 2 was determined for Cr and V concentrations in the needles from the Byford’s and Zvezdara forests and for Cu concentrations in needles from the Byford’s forest in relation to the reference site. The accumulation pattern of the microelements based on the BCF for needles is higher for I, Cs, Mo, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, Sb, and Tl. Since differences in the concentrations of macro- and microelements in the urban areas and the reference site can be identified C. atlantica can be recommended for assessing the environmental status.

AB - With the objective to quantify the Neogene extensional geodynamic drivers of the Peri Pannonian Realm s.l., a series of 1D basin models were carried out by integrating the available geological and geochemical data extracted from the landlocked Toplica Basin (central-southern Serbia; Serbo-Macedonian Unit). The modeling was conducted on four wells located immediately south of Jastrebac Mt., in the area of the Toplica Basin. The investigated southernmost point of the Peri Pannonian Ream s.l. (areas surrounding the basin, to the south of rivers Danube and Sava) underwent intense tectonically-driven subsidence episodes, which lasted from the Lower Miocene up to the Pliocene. The restored Neogene burial history (subsidence rates), paleotemperature, and calibrated paleo-heat fluxes (or changes in the ancient crustal or basal heat flow) indicated a two-staged crustal stretching of the wider Toplica area. The combined tectonic, i.e., thermal subsidence, resulted in a very high sedimentation rate, having an average ca. 300–400 m/Ma (Čučale unit). The intense tectonically-driven subsidence is consistent with the involvement of extensional processes, affecting the crustal and lithospheric layers of the retreating Adria/Dinarides, amplified by a distant Carpathian rollback stage. The regional extension led to the asymmetric opening and the formation of the Toplica Lower Miocene mesosaline to the freshwater lacustrine system. Higher participation of mixed microbiologically reworked/terrestrial organic matter incorporated in oil-prone Type II kerogen mainly characterized the investigated lacustrine sedimentary sequence. The latest Oligocene–earliest Neogene subsidence onset was characterized by elevated temperatures, affecting the early development of the oil window (ca. at 16 Ma). The 1D models also showed that the Lower Čučale unit achieved ca. 50% transformation ratio for the Type II organic matter. The two intra-Neogene extensional episodes suggested the existence of the Early Neogene “syn-rift” stage, followed by a thermal sagging. The Neogene continuous thinning of the overriding Serbo-Macedonian continental crust contributed to the “negative inversion” of the former pre-Neogene nappes. Therefore, Neogene tectonic reactivation induced contemporaneous subsidence, further allowing the extensional rise of the Jastrebac core complex.

AB - A diversity of factors, led by lithology, weathering, and erosion processes, plays a significant role in the formation and future of badland terrains. Then on previous observations it can be concluded that surface flow processes are the first trigger of erosion and that intense soil erosion combined with rapid and deep weathering are tightly connected to high erosion rates.Since climate change presents a global issue that gains increasing attention and due to the complexity of the interactions and processes that are a part of general badlands origin and evolution, a weathering experiment on badland sediments from China was conducted. Explaining temporal changes, the impact of different precipitation types and its durations of exposure on sediments during weathering processes, as well as its impact on leachate ions behaviour are the aims behind this experiment.Red clayey siltstone and mudstone badland sediments selected for the laboratory experiment were organized in four sets that included three different samples, making a total of 12 treated samples. Based on field climate data, in laboratory conditions samples were exposed to rain, acid rain, snow, and acid snow through fifteen daily cycles. Leachate was collected after each cycle and its volume, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and ion concentrations were measured and analysed from the leachate. Changes occurring on the surface of the sample were observed through photographs taken at the end of each cycle.Based on obtained results it can be said that the main differences occur when comparing rain and snow treatments generally. Temporal, cyclic changes were, to a certain extent, noticed through sediment decay. More importantly, durations of sediment exposure to precipitation proved to be crucial for weathering processes of tested siltstones and mudstones, having exclusion and ionic forces - ion exchange chromatography as dominant chemical processes.

More importantly, durations of sediment exposure to precipitation proved to be crucial for weathering processes of tested siltstones and mudstones, having exclusion and ionic forces - ion exchange chromatography as dominant chemical processes.",

AB - In Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, the therapeutic mud matured in the natural sedimentary environmental site. This work aimed to determine the influence of the peloid maturation process on the hydrocarbon and elemental distributions, as well as changes in morphology. For this purpose, the sample before and after maturation was examined using various methods. n-Alkanes were the most abundant among saturated hydrocarbons in both immature and mature peloid samples. The results showed that the maturation mainly influenced the change in distribution and concentration (from 378 to 1958 ppm) of n-alkanes. The organic matter (OM) of the immature peloid sample was characterized by a slight prevalence of long-chain and odd carbon-numbered n-alkanes, maximizing at n-C27. However, mature peloid's OM showed a similar share of short-, mid- and long-chain n-alkanes with a slight dominance of short-chain members, maximizing at n-C16. The origin of short-chain and even carbon-numbered n-alkanes was attributed to microbial precursors (e.g., Leptolyngbyaceae). Hopanes were considerably more dominant compared to steranes in both peloids. The hopane series of immature peloid was characterized by the dominance of 22,29,30-trinor-hop-5(6)-ene (C27 hopene), as well as the presence of C30-hop-22(29)-ene (diploptene), which are widespread in cyanobacterial species. The aromatic fraction of immature peloid pointed to the predominance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). As peloid aging progressed, the sample was richer in methyl-branched alkanes, carboxylic acids, their methyl esters, and thermodynamically more stable hopanes and steranes. The presence of elements with toxicological relevance during maturation was reduced below the limits prescribed in most of the directives for cosmetic products. It specifically refers to: As, Ni and Se. A higher concentration of total sulfur in the mature peloid can be related to gypsum precipitation in the summer and/or more intensive microbial activity.

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of weathering processes on the distribution of n-alkanes in unweathered and weathered samples of badland material. Organic matter (OM) of both the weathered and unweathered zones in badland environments is derived from the same sources such any differences between the n-alkane pattern of the two zones can be attributed to the impact of weathering processes under different climate conditions. Organic geochemical and mineralogical characterizations were employed to investigate twenty-one samples from weathered badland environments in Italy, Spain, and Canada that originally derive from marine, distal alluvial, and fluvial depositional settings, respectively. According to the distribution of n-alkanes and diterpanes, unweathered samples from Italy have an original mixed aquatic-terrestrial origin of OM, with a variable (low to moderate) contribution of terrestrial plants as precursors, while unweathered samples from Spain predominantly contain OM originating from submerged/floating macrophytes deposited under reducing conditions. Unweathered samples from Canada predominantly consist of terrigenous OM. Intensity of changes in n-alkanes distribution when subjected to weathering depends on the type of precursor biomass and quantity of smectite. Predominantly terrigenous OM under semi-arid conditions shows the highest affinity for adsorption is in contact with smectite surfaces. Mid- and long-chain odd n-alkanes have a tendency to build colloidal particles with polar organic compounds such as fatty acids by strong binding and thus their preservation from degradation is possible.

AB - Environmental literacy is essential for addressing the environmental challenges of our time. By improving the environmental literacy of children and the youth, we can help create a more sustainable future for all. Nevertheless, the aims of environmental education must be supported by political, technical, and infrastructural conditions. Furthermore, education at an early age cannot replace the role of adult education, since it is adult education that can bring quicker changes in the processes of citizen participation and decision-making. The development of environmental education should be connected with promoting equity, inclusion, and the quality of education in general. Schools should offer influential role models and the possibility to frequently spend time in nature, especially because it is not available to all families. For this reason, it is crucial to simultaneously work on the development of EE, environmental justice, and social equity.

AB - Efficient cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic water electrolysis rely on the use of expensive platinum group metals (PGMs). However, to achieve economically viable operation, both the content of PGMs must be reduced and their intrinsically strong H adsorption mitigated. Herein, we show that the surface effects of hydrogenated TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays can make osmium, a so far less-explored PGM, a highly active HER electrocatalyst. These defect-rich TiO2 nanostructures provide an interactive scaffold for the galvanic deposition of Os particles with modulated adsorption properties. Through systematic investigations, we identify the synthesis conditions (OsCl3 concentration/temperature/reaction time) that yield a progressive improvement in Os deposition rate and mass loading, thereby decreasing the HER overpotential. At the same time, the Os particles deposited by this procedure remain mainly sub-nanometric and entirely cover the inner tube walls. An optimally balanced Os@TNT composite prepared at 3 mM/55 °C/30 min exhibits a record low overpotential (η) of 61 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm–2, a high mass activity of 20.8 A mgOs–1 at 80 mV, and a stable performance in an acidic medium. Density functional theory calculations indicate the existence of strong interactions between the hydrogenated TiO2 surface and small Os clusters, which may weaken the Os–H* binding strength and thus boost the intrinsic HER activity of Os centers. The results presented in this study offer new directions for the fabrication of cost-effective PGM-based catalysts and a better understanding of the synergistic electronic interactions at the PGM|TiO2 interface.

In most cases, levels of nutrients are altered by the genotype, cultivation techniques and preharvest

geographical and botanical origin on chemical composition of organic cultivated Norwegian
plum fruits. Besides aroma, fruit color and firmness, sugar content is one of the main traits
that influence fruit taste and one of the main benchmarks. A total of eight sugars and two
sugar alcohols were quantified in 30 investigated plum samples. The most abundant sugar in
all tested samples was glucose, followed by fructose and sucrose. Significant differences in
the content of sugars and sugar alcohols were found among the examined samples. In
investigated plum, 24 mineral elements were determined. Four macro-elements were
quantified in larger amounts: potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium. Dominant
mineral in all investigated plums was K (10922 45002 mg kg-1). The contents of toxic
elements (mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium) were below the limit of quantification
(allowable concentration). These findings could be useful as a reference for selecting the
plum and cultivar breeding for each location.

AB - This study aimed to purify, characterise and stabilise the natural food colourant, R-phycocyanin (R-PC), from the red algae Porphyra spp. (Nori). We purified R-PC from dried Nori flakes with a high purity ratio (A618/A280 ≥ 3.4) in native form (α-helix content 53%). SAXS measurements revealed that R-PC is trimeric ((αβ)3) in solution. The thermal denaturation of α-helix revealed one transition (Tm at 52 °C), while the pH stability study showed R-PC is stable in the pH range 4–8. The thermal treatment of R-PC at 60 °C has detrimental and irreversible effects on R-PC colour and antioxidant capacity (22 % of residual capacity). However, immobilisation of R-PC within calcium alginate beads completely preserves R-PC colour and mainly retains its antioxidant ability (78 % of residual capacity). Results give new insights into the stability of R-PC and preservation of its purple colour and bioactivity by encapsulation in calcium alginate beads.

AB - The synthesis and characterization of four dumbbell-shaped fullerene molecules connected by isosorbide and isomannide moieties is presented. Additionally, their electrochemical behavior and their ability to form complexes with [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) were investigated. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) results of the fullerene dumbbells demonstrate a high electron affinity, indicating their strong interaction with electron-donating counterparts such as carbon nanorings, which possess complementary charge and shape properties. To study the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of complexation, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was employed. NMR titration experiments provided further insights into the binding stoichiometries. Two distinct approaches were utilized to create bridged structures: one based on cyclopropane and the other based on furan. Regardless of the type of linker used, all derivatives formed conventional 2 : 1 complexes denoted as [10]CPP2 ⊃C60derivative . However, the methano-dumbbell molecules exhibited distinct binding behavior, resulting in the formation of mono- and bis-pseudorotaxanes, as well as oligomers (polymers). The formation of linear polymers holds significant potential for applications in solar energy conversion processes.

AB - In the present study, we investigated in vitro the antimicrobial activity of the pygidial gland secretion of the guanophilic ground beetle Laemostenus (Pristonychus) punctatus (Dejean, 1828) and some of its chemicals against resistant and non-resistant bacteria and Candida species, the synergistic and additive potential of combinations of selected chemicals and antimicrobial drugs against resistant bacterial and fungal strains, anti-adhesive and anti-invasive potential of the secretion and formic acid alone and in selected combinations with antimicrobial drugs against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) toward spontaneously immortalized human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT cells). In addition, we examined the antiproliferative activity of the secretion and formic acid in vitro. The tested secretion and the standards of formic and oleic acids possessed a significant level of antimicrobial potential against all tested strains (P < 0.05). The isolate from guano Pseudomonas monteilii showed the highest resistance to the secretion and formic acid, while MRSA achieved a significantly high level of susceptibility to all agents tested, particularly to the combinations of formic acid and antibiotics, but at the same time showed a certain level of resistance to the antibiotics tested individually. Candida albicans and C. tropicalis were found to be the most sensitive fungal strains to the secretion. Formic acid (MIC 0.0005 mg/mL) and gentamicin (MIC 0.0010 mg/mL) in the mixture achieved synergistic antibacterial activity against MRSA (FICI = 0.5, P < 0.05). The combination of formic acid, gentamicin and ampicillin accomplished an additive effect against this resistant bacterial strain (FICI = 1.5, P < 0.05). The secretion achieved a better inhibitory effect on the adhesion ability of MRSA toward HaCaT cells compared to formic acid alone, while formic acid showed better results regarding the invasion (P < 0.001). The combinations of gentamicin and ampicillin, as well as of formic acid and gentamicin and ampicillin achieved similar anti-adhesive and anti-invasive effects, with a slight advantage of formic acid and antibiotics in combination (P < 0.001). The secretion and formic acid were found to be non-toxic to HaCaT cells in vitro (IC50 ≥ 401 μg/mL).

The secretion and formic acid were found to be non-toxic to HaCaT cells in vitro (IC50 ≥ 401 μg/mL).",

AB - A simple modification of bare glassy carbon electrode by electropolymerization of glycine by cyclic voltammetry was applied to the detection of ibuprofen. The polyglycine modified glassy carbon electrode was characterized by cyclic voltammetry and the electroactive surface area was determined. The study of ibuprofen in acetic acid buffer (0.25 M, pH 4.0) presented an electrocatalytic effect toward ibuprofen oxidation, increasing the current response and decrease of oxidation potential, at the modified electrode compared to the bare. Under the optimal conditions, the modified electrode gave a linear response in the ibuprofen concentration range of 10 to 200 μM, obtained correlation coefficient was 0.9993. the calculated limit of detection (3Sb/m) was 1.0 μM and the limit of quantification (10Sb/m) was 3.5 μM. the sensor was successfully used for the determination of ibuprofen in pharmaceutical preparations with satisfactory recoveries, 93–107 %. The new sensor showed good selectivity, repeatability, and reproducibility with satisfactory stability.

AB - Triclosan (TCS) is a polychlorinated phenoxy phenol (PCPPs) used as a disinfectant and a broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent in personal hygiene products. TCS easily forms diphenyl ethers and dioxins, which are persistent organic pollutants.

This work used a double approach for the TSC sensing: a) screen-printed (SPE) electrochemical platform for on-site application, modified with lanthanum iron oxide and graphitic carbon nitride composite (LaFeO3/Fe2O3@g-C3N4/SPE); and b) carbon paste electrode (CPE), modified with the same material and used in laboratory conditions. Linear range from 0.1 μM to 10 μM, the limit of detection (LOD) of 29 nM and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 91 nM were obtained for CP electrode in BRBS pH 8. SPE showed the best analytical parameters in BRBS at pH 3, with a linear range from 0.3 μM to 7 μM, LOD of 0.09 μM and LOQ of 0.28 μM. Furthermore, the influence of potential interferents was investigated and proven to be negligible. Determination of TSC was performed to estimate the environmental impact of this compound as well as the practical usefulness of the proposed sensor in the real sample analysis, confirmed with a HPLC analysis.

AB - Stable, water-soluble titanium complexed with mandelic acid was used as a precursor for titanium phosphorus double oxide obtained in hydrothermal conditions in the presence of phosphoric acid. Surprisingly, hydrolysis of organic complexes provided a microstructured sphere with narrow size distribution, low aggregation and a small fraction of morphological irregularities. Obtained microspheres had a complex structure comprised of flakes, whose size could be manipulated with temperature conditions. Samples were found to be electrochemically active against sulcotrione, a well-recognized herbicide. Electrochemical sensors based on the synthesized microspheres were successfully adapted for natural water reservoir analysis and exhibited low levels of detection of 0.61 µM, limit of quantification of 1.86 µM, wide dynamic linear range from 2 to 200 µM, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and in-time stability.
