Assessment of efficiency of rare earth elements recovery from lignite coal combustion ash via five-stage extraction

AB  - Rare earth elements (REE) are frequently referred to as ingredients for enhancements in modern industry, as they are extensively applied in many industrial branches due to their accented electro-magnetic and optical properties. REE have end-utilizations as catalysts, magnets, and as dopants for ceramic materials. Rare earth minerals are scarce therefore the unconventional REE-containing resources such as waste materials and industrial byproducts are continuously being investigated. Coal combustion products comprise REE concentrations varying between 200 ppm and 1500 ppm. This quantity can be isolated though the extraction procedure. In this study, the five stages extraction was conducted on the coal combustion ash from the selected landfill site. The extractions of 32 elements (As, Ga, Ce, Be, Ge, Nd, Cr, Zr, Eu, Cu, Nb, Gd, Co, Mo, Dy, Li, Ag, W, Mn, Cd, Au, Ni, In, Hg, Pb, Sn, Tl, V, Sb, Th, Zn, and La) were conveyed. Chemical analyses were conducted via XRF, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and AAS techniques. The complexity of the obtained data was examined by Principal component analysis and Cluster analysis in order to derive interconnections between quantity of elements and landfill characteristics, as well as mutual relationships among the elements of interest, and to assess the accomplishment of REE recovery from the coal ash.

AB  - This research proposed two pretreatments of viscose fabrics: oxidation with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO) and coating with TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCN), to introduce functional groups (COOH and CHO) suitable for irreversible binding of chitosan nanoparticles without and with embedded zinc (NCS and NCS + Zn, respectively) and consequently achieving washing durable antibacterial properties of the chitosan nanoparticles functionalized fabrics. The characterizations of pretreated and chitosan nanoparticles functionalized fabrics were performed by FTIR and XPS spectroscopy, elemental analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, zeta potential measurements, scanning electron microscopy, determination of COOH and CHO groups content, and antimicrobial activity under dynamic contact conditions. Influence of pretreatments on NCS and NCS + Zn adsorption, chemical, electrokinetic, and antibacterial properties as well as morphology, and washing durability of NCS and NCS + Zn functionalized fabrics were studied and compared. Washing durability was evaluated through changes in the chitosan and zinc content, zeta potential, and antibacterial activity after 1, 3, and 5 washing cycles. Pretreatments improved washing durability of antibacterial properties of chitosan nanoparticles functionalized fabrics. The NCS and NCS + Zn functionalized pretreated fabrics preserved antibacterial activity against S. aureus after five washing cycles, while antibacterial activity against E. coli was preserved only after one washing cycle in the case NCS + Zn functionalized pretreated viscose fabrics. © 2021 by the authors. AB  - Fatty acids (FAs) composition, 24 persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and 16 trace elements were examined in small pelagic fish (sardine, anchovy, round sardinella, chub and horse mackerels) caught by a fishing fleet for more than three years in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Five Unmix source profiles associated with both sources, such as overlapping diet, including low-niche marine organisms and inputs from the surrounding environmental compartments were resolved. Inorganic compounds were notably more abundant in fish tissue than organochlorine xenobiotics. Comparison with the values of toxicological parameters revealed that the examined fish species are safe for human consumption, while the content of FAs emphasized the studied species as a valuable source of nutrients. A significant linear correlation was not observed between the 18 FAs and lipophilic organochlorines. Based on the obtained database, future assessments of the quality of edible fish species and the aquatic environment of the eastern Mediterranean Sea, which is known as an important fishing ground, could be significantly improved.

AB  - Monoamine oxidases (MAOs) play a key role in the metabolism of major monoamine neurotransmitters. In particular, the upregulation of MAO-B in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer augmented the development of selective MAO-B inhibitors for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, such as the anti-parkinsonian MAO-B irreversible binder l-deprenyl (Selegiline®). Herein we report on the synthesis of novel fluorinated indanone derivatives for PET imaging of MAO-B in the brain. Out of our series, the derivatives 6, 8, 9 and 13 are amongst the most affine and selective ligands for MAO-B reported so far. For the derivative 6-((3-fluorobenzyl)oxy)-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one (6) exhibiting an outstanding affinity (Ki MAO-B = 6 nM), an automated copper-mediated radiofluorination starting from the pinacol boronic ester 17 is described. An in vitro screening in different species revealed a MAO-B region-specific accumulation of [18F]6 in rats and piglets in comparison to L-[3H]deprenyl. The pre-clinical in vivo assessment of [18F]6 in mice demonstrated the potential of indanones to readily cross the blood–brain barrier. Nonetheless, parallel in vivo metabolism studies indicated the presence of blood–brain barrier metabolites, thus arguing for further structural modifications. With the matching analytical profiles of the radiometabolite analysis from the in vitro liver microsome studies and the in vivo evaluation, the structure’s elucidation of the blood–brain barrier penetrant radiometabolites is possible and will serve as basis for the development of new indanone derivatives suitable for the PET imaging of MAO-B.

AB  - Azbest, kao neorganski materijal vlaknaste strukture u poslednje vreme izaziva posebnu
pažnju. On je prirodni mineral i često je zastupljen u brojnim komercijalnim
proizvodima (različiti premazi, tkanine, užad, punjenja za izolaciju objekata, papir,
pločice...). Pored njegovih izuzetnih osobina kao što su inertnost i termička
stabilnost, pokazuje i štetne efekte po zdravlje ljudi. Bolesti disajnih organa, neretko
sa fatalnim ishodom, izuzetno su ograničile njegovu primenu, pa se praktično može
reći da je zabranjen za opštu upotrebu. Smatra se da spada u kancerogene materije prve
klase. Međutim, u ranijim godinama on je bio prilično raširen u građevini i
mašinskoj industriji, te je kao materijal i dalje veoma prisutan. Nakon saznanja o
štetnim posledicama po zdravlje ljudi, počelo je njegovo uklanjanje.
Cilj rada je identifikovanje azbesta u neorganskim materijalima, klasifikacija
azbestnih vlakana, upoznavanje i usvajanje standardizovanih metoda za njegovo određivanje
u uzorkovanim čvrstim materijalima, kao što je metoda NIOSH-9002.
Navedena metoda se zasniva na jednostavnoj tehnici-polarizacionoj mikroskopiji.
Prikupljen je određeni broj uzoraka neorganskog građevinskog materijala. Primenom
navedene relativno pristupačne i jeftine tehnike, ustanovljeno je prisustvo azbesta u
uzorkovanom materijalu, čime se potvrđuje i ukazuje na obavezu uklanjanja predmeta koji
ga sadrže usled njegovog štetnog dejstva na zdravlje. Budući da je određivanje azbesta
nepoznanica čak i neorganskim hemičarima i da veliki broj laboratorija nema
akreditovanu metodu za dati parametar, ovaj rad dodatno predstavlja zanimljiv primer
eksperimentalne primene navedene tehnike i analize azbesta.

AB  - Nedovoljno je istražen naĉin deponovanja elektronskog otpada i sa njim elemenata retkih zemalja, koji u životnu sredinu dospevaju poreklom iz ovog otpada. Elementi retkih zemalja imaju mogućnost da se zadržavaju, samim tim koncentruju u zemljištu, pa tako iz razliĉitih izvora dospevaju u ljudski organizam, kojem mogu da naštete. Eksperimentalno su odreĊivane Frojndlihove sorpcione izoterme, grafiĉke zavisnosti adsorbovane mase metalnog jona po masi adsorbenta u odnosu na poĉetnu masu metalnog jona iz rastvora, kao i sorpcioni kapaciteti zemljišta za elemente: lantan, erbijum i gadolinjum.
Kako bi mogla da se pravi paralela izmeĊu razliĉitih tipova zemljišta i njihove sposobnosti adsorpcije, odreĊene su karakteristike za sva tri zemljišta: pH, sadržaj higroskopne vlage, minerološki sastav, kao i sadržaj humusa, gline i peska. Eksperimentalno je, potom, odreĊivan sorpcioni kapacitet i Frojndlihove sorpcione izoterme zemljišta za tri tipiĉna elementa retkih zemalja (lantan, erbijum i gadolinijum), kako bi se utvrdilo da li na ovakvim tipovima zemljišta može da se odlaže elektronski otpad i u kojoj koliĉini.

AB  - Pollutants such as pharmaceutical products and pesticides are still present in treated water. Several of these compounds are photoactive. The photodegradation of eight organic pollutants was studied using listed advanced oxidation processes: UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate, Fenton, photo-Fenton and UV/TiO2. The results show that photodegradation is most effective in the first 10 min of treatments in simulated urban wastewater collected from the local Nišava River. To identify the correlation between applied degradation processes as well as the relationship among the structure of investigated compounds and efficiency of degradation, Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed. The established correlations between the applied processes, as well as the determination of the influence of the structure on the efficiency of degradation, enable a more efficient choice of the degradation procedure, especially in the case of interference. Additionally, process electrical energy consumption and treatment costs for simulated urban wastewater with different pharmaceuticals and pesticides were determined.

AB  - The mutual impact of low-quality lignite and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during open system pyrolysis was investigated, aiming to improve utilization of lignite with simultaneous treatment of HDPE waste. Pyrolysis of lignite, HDPE, and their mixture (mass ratio, 1:1) was performed at temperatures 400, 450, 500, 550, and 600 °C. Initial substrates and pyrolysis products were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), specific carbon isotope analysis of individual hydrocarbons (δ13C), Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and elemental analysis. The positive synergetic effect during co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture was observed at temperatures ≥450 °C, with the greatest being at 500 °C. The highest yield of liquid co-pyrolysis products with a similar composition to that of crude oils is also noticed at 500 °C. The yields of liquid and gaseous products and quality of pyrolytic products obtained by co-pyrolysis of lignite/HDPE mixture are notably improved compared with pyrolysis of lignite alone. On the other hand, data obtained from pyrolysis of HDPE alone indicate that it cannot be concurrent to well-developed catalytic thermal processes for polymer recycling. However, concerning the huge amount of produced HDPE, at least part of this plastic material can be reused for advanced thermal treatment of lignite, particularly in countries where this low-rank coal represents the main source of energy.

AB  - The citric acid (CA), dextran (DEX) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) are frequently used ligands for surface modification of magnetite nanoparticles to improve their colloidal stability and biocompatibility for use in biomedicine. Here we report the synthesis, surface modification of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and analysis of the influence of coating materials on heating efficiency in magnetic hyperthermia, as well as on electrochemical sensing toward the detection of neurotransmitter dopamine (DOP). Spherical magnetite nanoparticles (~13 nm) were prepared by co-precipitation and surface-modified with CA, APTES and DEX. The hyperthermia tests revealed that Fe3O4@APTES resulted in the highest specific absorption rate (SAR) of 67.2 W/g. The engineered sensor, by surface modification of screen-printed carbon (SPC) electrodes with Fe3O4@APTES, showed linear response with DOP in the concentration range of 1−200 μM and a low detection limit of 34.3 nM. Besides, the sensor offered remarkable selectivity, repeatability and reproducibility. Application of SPC-, Fe3O4-, Fe3O4@CA- and Fe3O4@DEX-modified SPC electrode resulted in lower electrocatalytic activity compared with Fe3O4@APTES/SPC. The obtained results indicate the effects of a surface modifier especially that Fe3O4@APTES, alone and combining with SPC electrodes, can serve as an agent in various types of biomedical applications, like hyperthermia and electrochemical sensing of biologically active compounds such as DOP.

AB  - The phenolic and elemental profiles of Serbian autochthonous grape varieties ‘Smederevka’ and ‘Plovdina’ were studied and compared with some international varieties. Total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity were highest in seeds of ‘Plovdina’, and in ‘Smederevka’ skins, which also had the highest contents of ferulic, chlorogenic and caffeic acids (16.0, 1.44 and 0.98 mg/kg, respectively). Protocatechuic acid was quantified only in the seeds of these varieties. Untypically for Vitis vinifera L. species, the presence of malvidin 3,5-O-dihexoside was found in the skins of ‘Vranac’ and ‘Muscat Hamburg’. In ‘Plovdina’ skins among the anthocyanins, hexosides of peonidin and delphinidin were prevalent. ‘Plovdina’ grapes had lower quantities of Al, Ni and Na in comparison to the other varieties intended for white wine production. Significant correlations among the most abundant elements, such as K, P, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Cu, and Zn, pointed to potential positive interactions. For elements that have toxicological reference values, the health risk assessment was calculated for adults and children, and suggested that all samples were safe for human consumption.

AB  - Od decembra 2019. godine i samog početka pandemije SARS-CoV-2 pa do danas, nije pronađen efikasan lek protiv kovida-19 izazvanog ovim virusom. U nedostatku vremena, pribegava se analizi lekova sa antivirusnim svojstvima koji su već u upotrebi, a koriste se u terapiji drugih oboljenja. U ovom završnom radu, kao okosnica istraživanja korišćen je hidroksihlorokin, dizajnirana su nova jedinjenja sa idejom retencije imunosupresorskih svojstva hidroksihlorokina, dok bi izmene imale za svrhu poboljšanje potencijalnih antivirusnih svojstava. Afinitet glavne proteaze koronavirusa prema dizajniranim jedinjenjima ispitan je in silico, molekulskim dokingom, u svrhu nalaženja bioizostera hidroksihlorokina sa strukturnim i hemijskim svojstvima, koji bi inhibicijom aktivnog mesta glavne proteaze koronavirusa mogli da zaustave infekciju u ljudskom organizmu.

AB  - Predmet ove disertacije bio je proučavanje uticaja herbicida sa ili bez primene folijarnog đubriva na sadržaj fitohemikalija u listu i zrnu četiri hibrida kukuruza šećerca (ZP504su, ZP355su, ZP553su i ZP515su) tokom dve godine, u cilju definisanja njihove tolerantnosti i karakterističnog odgovora. Sadržaj fitohemikalija određen je primenom visoko-efikasne tečne hromatografije sa ultravioletnim detektorom sa više dioda i fluorescentnim detektorom i visoko-efikasne jonske hromatografije sa pulsno-amperometrijskim detektorom. Sadržaj ukupnih fenolnih jedinjenja, glutationa i antioksidativna aktivnost određeni su primenom UV/VIS spektrofotometrije. Hromatografska razdvajanja su postignuta pri nižim protocima mobilnih faza uz smanjen utrošak organskih rastvarača podržavajući na taj način trendove zelene analitičke hemije. Dobra linearnost, tačnost, niska granica detekcije, direktno HPLC određivanje ekstrakata bez derivatizacije, skraćeno vreme ekstrakcije i trajanja analize omogućili su rutinsko korišćenje primenjenih hromatografskih metoda. Rezultati su pokazali da je uticaj tretmana bio izraženiji u zrnu, dok u listu uglavnom nije bio statistički značajan. Primena oba herbicida dovela je do statistički značajnog povećanja ukupnog sadržaja svih fitohemikalija u ZP553su na osnovu čega se on može definisati kao tolerantan genotip. Primenjeni tretmani izazvali su aktiviranje neenzimskih antioksidanasa kod ZP355su, a kod ZP515su aktiviranje metabolizma ugljenih hidrata. Rezultati su pokazali da se sadržaj karotenoida, vitamina E, fenolnih kiselina i šećera može koristiti kao jedinstven pokazatelj genotipa nakon primenjenih tretmana. Pokazano je da kontrolisana upotreba herbicida može dovesti do poboljšanja fitohemijskog profila i povećanja nutritivnog statusa kukuruza šećerca.
AB  - The subject of this doctoral dissertation was the impact of herbicides with or without foliar fertilizer on phytochemicals content in leaf and grain in four hybrids of sweet maize (ZP504su, ZP355su, ZP553su, and ZP515su) during two years in order to define their tolerance and characteristic response. The content of phytochemicals was determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with an ultraviolet multi-diode detector and a fluorescent detector, and high-performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection. The content of total phenolic compounds, glutathione and antioxidant activity was determined using UV / VIS spectrophotometry. Chromatographic separations were achieved at lower mobile phase flows with reduced consumption of organic solvents, thus supporting the trends of green analytical chemistry. Good linearity, accuracy, low limit of detection, direct HPLC determination of extracts without derivatization, shortened extraction time, and duration of analysis enabled the routine use of applied chromatographic methods. The results showed that the impact of the treatment was more conspicuous in the grain, while in the leaf it was generally not statistically significant. The application of both herbicides led to a statistically significant increase in the total content of all phytochemicals in ZP553su, based on which it can be defined as a tolerant genotype. The applied treatments caused the activation of non-enzymatic antioxidants in ZP355su, and in ZP515su the activation of carbohydrate metabolism. The results of this study indicated that the content of carotenoids, vitamin E, phenolic acids and sugars can be used as a characteristic phytochemical parameter of the genotype after the applied treatments. It has been shown that the controlled use of herbicides can lead to an improvement in the phytochemical profile and an increase in the nutritional status of sweet maize.

BanLec-eGFP Chimera as a Tool for Evaluation of Lectin Binding to High-Mannose Glycans on Microorganisms

AB  - Fluorescently labeled lectins are useful tools for in vivo and in vitro studies of the structure and function of tissues and various pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi. For the evaluation of high-mannose glycans present on various glycoproteins, a three-dimensional (3D) model of the chimera was designed from the crystal structures of recombinant banana lectin (BanLec, Protein Data Bank entry (PDB): 5EXG) and an enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP, PDB 4EUL) by applying molecular modeling and molecular mechanics and expressed in Escherichia coli. BanLec-eGFP, produced as a soluble cytosolic protein of about 42 kDa, revealed β-sheets (41%) as the predominant secondary structures, with the emission peak maximum detected at 509 nm (excitation wavelength 488 nm). More than 65% of the primary structure was confirmed by mass spectrometry. Competitive BanLec-eGFP binding to high mannose glycans of the influenza vaccine (Vaxigrip®) was shown in a fluorescence-linked lectin sorbent assay (FLLSA) with monosaccharides (mannose and glucose) and wild type BanLec and H84T BanLec mutant. BanLec-eGFP exhibited binding to mannose residues on different strains of Salmonella in flow cytometry, with especially pronounced binding to a Salmonella Typhi clinical isolate. BanLec-eGFP can be a useful tool for screening high-mannose glycosylation sites on different microorganisms.

AB  - Synthesis of novel aminoquinoline derivatives has been accomplished and their activity against malaria strains has been examined. The compounds showed moderate in vitro antimalarial activity against two P. falciparum strains, 3D7 (CQ susceptible clone) and Dd2 (CQ resistant clone). Three aminoquinolines were further examined for antimalarial efficacy in a mouse model using a modified Thompson test. In this model, mice were infected with P. berghei-infected red blood cells, and drugs were administered orally. Antimalarial 3 was found toxic at a dose of 320 (mg/kg)/day in 3/6 mice, however, 2/6 mice of the same group survived through day 31, and one of them was cured. © 2021 Serbian Chemical Society.
